About The Event

Ladies of Light is the first of if its kind to fuse the tradition of female creatives and the much needed voices of some of the most respected female scholars and speakers in the UK.It is an event which brings together the finest female creatives from poets, singers, storytellers, rappers and more with the most prominent, and respected female scholars and speakers in the UK.

This year we are stripping back and going unplugged, creating unique spaces of collective creativity, song and expression . Where we can unplug from the system.and plug into our spiritual hard drive. This is not a performance but a space where we nourish our feminine creativity but with the needed reminders and access to female scholarship.

Session 3 : Preservers of the Deen: Women and the Quran

We delve into the history of women and their relationship with the Quran. From the reciters, preservers and the women who taught, and who lived by the Quran. Women such as Lady Fiddah, Umm Waraqah and Hafsah bint Umar.

How can we as women better our relationship with the word of God? How can we use it to create a longing relationship with the Divine? What are the messages that the Quran has for women today?

About the speakers:

Ustadha Iffet Rafeeq

Ustadha Iffet Rafeeq is the daughter-in-law of Mufti Abdul Rasool Mansoor Al-Azhari.

She began her studies at the age of 16 at Jamia Al-Karam, where she studied Islamic studies and Classical Arabic under the likes of Shaykh Muhammad Imdad Hussain Pirzada, Hafiz Gul Muhammad Al-Azhari, and Hafiz Mahboob Al-Azhari, completing her classical ‘Aalimah course and achieving top marks consistently. During this time she was appointed as a teacher and a spiritual counsellor for convert Muslims. Whilst doing her 'Aalimah course, she also studied part-time with Shaykh Atabek Shukurov, and Shaykh Burhan Khandia.

After graduating from Jamia Al-Karam, she was one of the three students selected for a scholarship for Al-Azhar University in Cairo where she studied Arabic Grammar.

Upon returning to the UK, she was appointed as a teacher of Islamic Theology at City Hasanat College. It was during this time that she completed her diploma in business management. She continued her studies with Shaykh Zain ul Aqtab Siddiqui of Suyuti Institute. She has experience in teaching in both Secondary schools and higher education.

She is currently studying Contextualised Islamic and Leadership studies in Cambridge Muslim College under the world renowned scholar Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad.

Ustadha Iffet is co-founder, and the chairwoman of Dust to Diamonds, a Da’wah and counselling programme tailored for modern day issues. She is also popularly known as a part time YouTuber.

Ustadha Nishat Lal

Ustadha Nishat Lal was raised in Cardiff, Wales. A born Muslim of Indian descent, she began studying Arabic at age 14, which was her springboard to receiving Bachelor’s degrees in Arabic and History from the University of London.

She then traveled to Syria, where she met Anse Tamara Gray, earned her ijāza in tajwīd and studied at the University of Damascus for a year.

Upon her return to England she earned a Master’s degree in Arabic Translation from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, after which she married her husband, who is from Jordan.

Ustadha Nishat has taught tajwīd online extensively as well as in person.
